Young Adult Smokers¡¯ Perception and Attitude toward the Cigarette Pack Warning Picture: ¡°It has Nothing to Do with Me!¡±
Her Won-Bin

Abstract
Most smokers start smoking cigarette in their young adulthood. The mandatory attachment of warning pictures on cigarette pack for smoking prevention and cessation has been implemented in Korea since 2016. Compared to other populations, adolescents and young adults are found to have significantly lower levels of response and empathy to warning pictures. However, there are lack of literature on how young smokers perceive cigarette pack warning pictures. Therefore, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 15 young smokers using qualitative research methods to explore the perception of cigarette pack warning pictures among young adult smokers. Through the thematic analysis, a total of 8 sub themes were derived from 3 themes: the experience, awareness, and believability warning pictures, and suggestion for effective warning pictures were derived. The young smoker was taking the cigarette pack warning picture negatively, indifferently, or playfully. The situation depicted in the warning picture was thought to have nothing to do with them, or to happen in the distant future, not now. As a result, young smokers sensibly observe cigarette pack warning pictures, but did not elicit cognitive or behavioral changes. This study found that young smokers' sensory stimuli for cigarette pack warning pictures occurred, but there was no change in their perception and behavior. Based on the results of this study, practical and policy suggestions were provided for an effective implementation of cigarette pack warning pictures for young smokers.
